Near the base of the cattail plant

Gordon Morrison, Pond, Boston, Houghton Mifflin Company, 2002, p. 3.

Under water near the base of the cattail plant young caddisfly insects slowly crawl. Young caddisflies build cases around themselves for safety. The cases are made from bits of leaves, twigs, or sand found in the pond. So caddisflies may be hard to see.
